Why Chiropractic Care and Pilates Are the Perfect Pair

We joined in conversation with Austin Chiropractor, Dr. Gab Wagabaza, who specializes in perinatal care. We were excited to learn about how she supports women through the different stages of pregnancy while also helping them achieve desirable births—sharing how her type of care can truly play a significant role on a mother’s birth team.  Dr. Wagabaza shared another unique approach to her practice: offering collaborative care with a Pilates studio. While we’re proponents of both practices, we loved learning more about how they work in tandem in, as Dr. Wagabaza puts it, “a beautiful sanctuary for wellness, restoration, and revitalization”. Read on to find out how you can incorporate these practices for a better pregnancy, labor, and postpartum recovery.

Can you please share a bit about your Chiropractic practice?

    GW

As a diversified chiropractor, I employ a range of techniques to tailor each adjustment to my patient’s unique needs. For pregnant women, I utilize my training in both the Webster Technique and the Motion Palpation Institute Perinatal Training to provide optimal adjustments and muscular treatments. These techniques support mothers throughout the different stages of pregnancy, whether it’s offering relief from first trimester symptoms, supporting the pelvis as it shifts in response to pregnancy changes, or preparing the pelvis for birth. My aim is to help facilitate the best environment for the baby to enhance the likelihood of a mother achieving the birth experience she desires. I believe my primary role in the birth process is to be a part of the support system. As a chiropractor, I often spend considerable time with my pregnant patients, sometimes even more than their OB-GYN during certain stages. I strive to be a listening ear, a source of support, and an information provider, empowering patients to make informed decisions for their ideal pregnancy and birth experience. My goal is for every patient to feel genuinely cared for and to share moments of connection. I conclude each visit with meditation to ensure the lasting impact on the nervous system. Post-adjustment integration is crucial, allowing mothers to relax and connect in a serene environment designed for their well-being.

Your residency is in the beautiful studio, AM Radio. How did your partnership come to fruition?

    GW

I began taking classes and eventually private sessions with Christian, the founder, at the AM Radio Studio, which sparked an instant friendship rooted in our shared passion for the body. When I was looking for a space to expand my practice, Christian enthusiastically suggested that I bring my practice to AM Radio. I truly believe the combination of both Chiropractic and Pilates creates such a beautiful sanctuary for wellness, restoration, and revitalization.

How do Pilates and chiropractic care complement each other?

    GW

Pilates was created by an anatomist and is fundamentally focused on helping people feel and move to their highest capabilities. The philosophy of chiropractic care shares this message. Chiropractic care is centered on empowering the body’s natural ability to heal. When the body is given the right tools, love, and care, the possibilities are limitless. Both chiropractic and Pilates philosophies echo the belief that the spine is the root of health and wellness.

What is the Webster Technique and how does it support one's pregnancy?

    GW

The Webster Technique is a chiropractic assessment used on  many expectant moms, helping to keep the pelvis balanced and aligned during pregnancy. This technique helps expectant moms by reducing  tension in the muscles and ligaments around your pelvis, making more room for the  growing baby and easing common discomforts like lower back and pelvic pain. By promoting better alignment and improving overall body function, it can also help your baby get into the best position for birth, potentially leading to a smoother, more comfortable labor and delivery.

Are there any at home recommendations you have for mom to be's or new moms on how to tend to their body?

    GW

My favorite recommendations a daily walks or movement to help support a healthy delivery. Stay hydrated and ensure proper protein intake to support the growth of the baby and ensure the mom has enough to support her overall health. Bone broth is a great source. Be mindful of supporting your mental health. Checking in with your support system. Meditation or breath work, finding practices that curate a calm and supportive environment. Getting natural sources of folate due to its ability to cross the placenta. The best sources are  grass fed and  grass finished beef liver and green leafy vegetables.
